I agree, but most people aren't aware that there is almost always a button on the top that will flush the toilet manually. (and don't get me started on revolving toilet seat covers. yuck.)
It's sad when people can't figure out how to use a toilet.
The article's point about flushing via the button seems to be that when you do press the button, you defeat the hands-free (thereby more hygenic) purpose of the toilet.

I like the idea of foot pedal flushing.
I hit everything with my foot, even the button and the pedal when it's 6 feet high.
